Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute’s Academic Support Center and Writing Center on the Caldwell Campus have a new home inside the Broyhill Learning Resource Center, which is also home to the college’s library. The newly transformed “learning commons” space will offer a variety of resources for students and additional quiet study rooms, all centrally located in E Building.
CCC&TI’s Academic Support Center (ASC) offers a variety of free services to enhance students’ learning experience, including tutoring, online tutoring, placement test reviews, various academic resources and computer and printing services.
The Writing Center offers students the tools necessary to write and communicate effectively with an individualized and collaborative environment. A fully trained staff is on-hand to help students will all levels of writing and at all stages of the writing process. The Writing Center got its start in 2007 as part of the Quality Enhancement Plan, “Write On.”
The goal for the project is to make these resources more convenient for students using the library while also making library resources more readily available to students using the Academic Support Center and the Writing Center.
“We want to do all we can to help our students be successful,” said CCC&TI President, Dr. Mark Poarch. “Making these centers more convenient and providing a comfortable space for students to get the assistance they need is just one more step we can take to help them reach their goals.”
The project also opened space in the John Forlines Building, which previously housed the Writing Center and Academic Support. That space has been used for an expanded Testing Center and other renovations to improve student support functions.
The project was funded by a $100,000 grant from the Charles A. Cannon Charitable Trust and supporters.
