Frequently Asked Questions

How and When VMware classes meet?

All of our VMware course lectures are delivered "Live Online" using Adobe Connect and VMware's View Horizon (VDI) that works similarly to a remote desktop application. This allows us to teach anyone from anywhere around the world and interact "live" in real time with the class.

Each class is:

  • Recorded and will become available shortly after each lecture is competed, giving the ability to makeup or repeat any lessons
  • We also provide a virtual environment to complete the required lab work, giving the ability to play and practice with VMware throughout the length of the course
  • Or "Live Online" lectures meet 4 days a week for 4 weeks from 6pm EST to 9pm EST. The typical format is 2 weeks of lecture - one week off - then two weeks on for 5 total weeks
  • We also give 3 additional weeks of 24/7 access to the environment to complete additional lab work or repeat labs and lessons to better prepare you for the VCP exam

Here is a sample schedule:

  • Week 1: Live Online Class meets Monday through Thursday 6pm-9pm EST. Friday self-paced time
  • Week 2: Live Online Class meets Monday through Thursday 6pm-9pm EST. Friday self-paced time
  • Week 3: No Live Online Classes. Self-paced lab time to catch up on lab work or repeat lesson
  • Week 4: Live Online Class meets Monday through Thursday 6pm-9pm EST. Friday self-paced time
  • Week 5: Live Online Class meets Monday through Thursday 6pm-9pm ES. Friday self-paced time
  • Week 6: No Live Online Classes Self-paced lab time to catch up on lab work, repeat lessons, and work on additional labs for VCP test prep
  • Week 7: No Live Online Classes Self-paced lab time to catch up on lab work, repeat lessons, and work on additional labs for VCP test prep
  • Week 8: No Live Online Classes Self-paced lab time to catch up on lab work, repeat lessons, and work on additional labs for VCP test prep

Will I be eligible to get my VCP (VMware Certified Professional) by taking your classes?

VMware requires you to take an official VMware course before you can test to become certified. If you successfully complete our VMware vSphere 6.0 Install, Configure, Manage course you will be able sit for the VCP (VMware Certified Professional) exam. All of our VMware courses are official and meet the requirements needed. You will be responsible for taking the VCP exam on your own terms. The VCP exam is not a part of the course.

What format are the classes?

Once you log into Moodle the classes are taught through Adobe Connect live online with the instructor via web cam. You have the ability to interact with our instructor and ask questions by instant messaging or by email.

How do students connect to the online classes?

Our school uses Moodle as our learning management system, which is used by many universities throughout the country. We also use a program called Adobe Connect that is very similar to Go-to-Meeting, but based more for learning rather than meetings. Together, these applications make for a very unique and productive online learning environment.

Are there any exams, papers, projects or group projects?

VMware requires you to complete all of the labs in the book. Additionally, VMware requires you to complete an official VMware course before you can sit for their exam to become a VCP (VMware Certified Professional). You take the exam at a participating testing facility on your own time. The certification exam is not a part of the class.

Will there be hands-on labs?

Yes. You will be using our equipment and will be building your own virtual server to work with to complete the class. You will have access to your machine for the duration of the class. You will be connecting to our environment using VMware View which is similar to an RDP session so you can have 24/7 access to the class environment from home, work or anywhere that has a good internet connection.

Is the class difficult?

Most people would say yes. It is recommended that you spend time working with VMware before you take the exam. This is upper level training and not for the faint of heart. The more you work with VMware the better off you will be.

Are there books for the class?

Yes. VMware requires us to use their official books. These books can be ordered through our online bookstore for $48 plus any shipping cost. We usually ship books out the day an order is received.

What does the syllabus for the vSphere 6 Install, Configure, Manage class look like? What will I be learning?

All of our classes are official VMware courses. You can view the syllabus for our ICM course directly from VMware's website (https://mylearn.vmware.com/descriptions/EDU_DATASHEET_vSphereInstallConfigureManage_V6.pdf).

What happens if I miss a class?

Every class is recorded and easily accessible. This is great for those who have to miss a class or anyone wanting to review a class on their own.

Who is VMware training available to?

VMware training is only available to individuals who may be a student in full or part time education, unemployed, career changers or trying to improve their knowledge and are paying for the training themselves. It is not for companies or corporate entities to obtain training for their employees - those individuals must go to a commercial VMware training offering through a VMware authorized training center - see: VMware Commercial Training

VMware VCP-DCV Certification Information for VMware IT Academy Students
Attending Courses after 1 January 2018

For candidates interested in becoming certified as a VCP6-DCV or VCP6.5-DCV, there are two options to choose from. Candidates must complete all steps from either Option A or Option B in order to receive their credential.

Option A: Commercial Training Path (commercial courses appear in MyLearn / Certification Manager)

  • Step 1) Complete a qualifying certification course either directly from VMware or from a VATC (VMware Authorized Training Center)*
  • Step 2) Pass the vSphere 6.x Foundations commercial exam (2V0- -602 [v6.5] or 2V0-620 [v6.0])
  • Step 3) Pass the VCP 6.x - Data Center Virtualization commercial exam (2V0-622 [v6.5] or 2V0-621[v6]

*See full requirement details on our main VCP6-DCV / VCP6.5-DCV certification page. Be sure to select the path that best fits your qualifications.

Option B: IT Academy Training (IT Academy courses do not appear in MyLearn / Certification Manager. IT Academy students use a special academic (‘PSE’) exam voucher for the VCP-DCV exam to provide qualifying training course credit. Students must complete the VCP6.x-DCVPSE exam using the voucher provided by the Academy instructor)

  • Step 1) Take vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage and/or vSphere Optimize and Scale course at an IT Academy**
  • Step 2) Pass the vSphere 6.x Foundations exam (2V0- -602 [v6.5] or 2V0-620 [v6]).
Note: there is no special academic (‘PSE’) exam voucher for the vSphere 6.x Foundations exam.
  • Step 3) Pass VCP 6.x - Data Center Virtualization ‘PSE’ exam (2V0-622PSE [v6.5] or 2V0-621PSE [v6]) using the special academic exam voucher provided to the student by the IT Academy instructor

**Academy course attendance will not appear in MyLearn / Cert Manager. The vSphere: ICM course alone does not qualify as fulfilling the training course requirement on the IT Academy path. Thus, the student must register for and pass the special academic PSE version exam (listed under “PSE Exams” section on the Pearson “Select Exam” registration page) in order to receive qualifying course credit required for VCP-DCV certification.

Important: VMware will NOT certify a candidate if:

  • The student attended both courses (vSphere: ICM and vSphere: Optimize & Scale) at an IT Academy but DID NOT register for the special academic version (‘PSE’) of the VCP 6.x-DCV exam (2V0-622PSE [v6.5] or 2V0-621PSE [v6]) using the voucher provided by the instructor. VMware will not accept commercial (non-academic/‘PSE’) versions of the VCP6-DCV or VCP6.5-DCV exams.
