Truck Driver Training

Our truck driver training program started around 1990 with one truck and a few students. Today we have over 40 pieces of equipment and have graduated over 2000 CDL drivers in the past 10 years. We offer full-time day and part-time evening and weekend classes to fit most CCC&TI Semi in front of school schedules. Day classes require 8.5 weeks to complete, evening classes 15 weeks and weekend classes take 17 weekends. Satellite or off-campus day classes are also available at several locations.

We are located at 3030 Hickory Boulevard (Highway 321) on the Transportation and Public Service (TAPS) Center of Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, Hudson NC 28638. The center is 12 miles north of Hickory, 70 miles NW of Charlotte and 77 miles east of Asheville and directly across the road from the Hudson DMV and the Highway Patrol station.

Our truck driver training program is certified by the Professional Truck Driving Institute (PTDI) located in Alexandra, VA. PTDI is the first non-profit organization to develop uniform skills performance, curriculum and certification standards for the trucking industry and to award course certification to entry-level truck driver finishing programs.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) supports the PTDI curriculum as representing the basis for adequate training of entry-level drivers.

Employment Outlook

The trucking industry continues to be a major employer in the United States, with almost 9 million people employed in trucking-related jobs. Over 3 million of these are drivers of tractor-trailers operated by over 550,000 interstate motor carriers. More than 80% of the U.S. cities receive their goods exclusively from trucks.

There is already a shortage of about 20,000 long-haul heavy-truck drivers and experts say there will be over 500,000 drivers needed in the next 10 years to meet economic expansion and replace drivers who are retiring.

At CCC&TI, we have a very successful job placement program with numerous local and national trucking companies recruiting our graduates during and after each class. Graduates from our program can expect to average $34,000 or more their first year and up to $50,000 or better with one year of experience.
