As a Health Service Provider…

Medical Transcriptionists are medical language specialists who interpret and transcribe letters, reports, and other dictation, by doctors and other healthcare professionals about the assessment of patients. They transcribe a variety of medical reports about emergency room visits, diagnostic imaging studies, operations, chart reviews, and final summaries. Other reports may include information about therapeutic procedures, clinical courses, diagnosis, prognosis, and other medical processes. Dictation may include pathology and radiology reports, and discharge summaries. Other dictated materials include patient histories, examinations, and progress reports.

Medical transcriptionists type from voice recordings that they listen to through earphones. While a variety of equipment is still used, most transcriptionists today do their work on computers. To accurately transcribe dictated reports into a format that is clear for the reader, medical transcriptionists must understand the language of medicine, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, and treatment. They must also be able to translate medical jargon and abbreviations into their expanded forms. Before returning reports in either printed or electronic form to the dictator, medical transcriptionists review and edit their work for spelling and grammar. These reports then become a part of a patient's permanent file.
