Phlebotomy is a course which prepares the student to draw blood specimens from patients/clients for analysis.

Program Content

The class/lab component includes the proper selection of venipuncture sites, the correct order of draw, the use and care of collection tubes, the proper collection of blood specimens, data entry, communication skills, as well as clerical duties associated with record keeping. Students perform both capillary collections and venipunctures on each other; the student will stick and be stuck during class lab. Upon successful completion of class/lab the student is assigned to attend a clinical site where the student will demonstrate previously learned knowledge and skills, including proper procedures for venipuncture collections. Upon successful completion of class/lab and clinical the student will receive a certificate and be prepared to sit for the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) national certification examination.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics website:
  • The national median annual pay in 2015 was $31,630.00; or hourly rate of $15.21

  • Employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 25 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. Hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, blood donor centers, and other locations will need phlebotomists to perform blood work.

Licensure: Authorization granted to CCC&TI to provide instruction within another state does not imply or provide guarantees of any kind that an individual will be granted professional licensure by another state as a result of completing coursework at CCC&TI or receiving professional licensure in North Carolina. It is the sole responsibility of the individual/student to determine whether another college or license-awarding agency in another state will accept CCC&TI coursework and/or award licensure through a reciprocity agreement with the State of North Carolina.

    • Yes, students must interact with classmates by drawing blood specimens from each other.
  • Is there a state or national examination?
    • Yes. Students who successfully complete the phlebotomy class/lab/clinical are eligible to apply to sit for the American Society of Phlebotomists (ASPT) exam for national certification. Although, completers are not required to have national certification in order to practice as a phlebotomist in North Carolina; many facilities require certification for employment.
