The 316-hour course is designed to prepare students to take the state board examination to become a licensed manicurist through the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art. Topics covered during the course include the professional image, manicuring and pedicuring, bacteriology, sanitation and disinfecting, nail product chemistry, anatomy and physiology, OSHA safety regulations, disorders of the nail, acrylic nails, nail wraps, gel nails, silk wraps, nail art, nail enhancements, nail piercing, nail jewelry and nail appliqués.

You will work exclusively on nails and provide manicures and pedicures for clients. They sometimes work in hair salons, barbershops, department stores, and nursing and other residential care homes. These workers are trained to take special care of customers' fingernails and toenails. From a simple cleaning and strengthening treatment, to an elaborate project of design and color, manicurists are concerned with grooming nails and making them look attractive, which, in turn, makes the customer feel good.
Manicurists first meet with clients to discuss the treatment they want. They clean, shape, and buff the nails. Manicurists remove previously applied nail polish with liquid remover and swabs. They shape and smooth the ends of the nails with scissors, files, and emery boards. Manicurists clean the customers' nails in soapy water, using swabs, files, and orange sticks. They soften the nail cuticles with water and oil, push back the cuticles using cuticle knives, and trim the cuticles with scissors and nippers. Manicurists whiten the underside of the nails with white paste or pencil. They polish the nails using powdered polish and a buffer, or apply clear or colored liquid polish onto nails with brushes. Manicurists may apply artificial nails or nail extensions or tips to finger nails. They wrap nails in linen or silk to mend and strengthen them and advise customers on nail care. Manicurists may decorate nails by painting intricate pictures on them or creating three-dimensional designs, using paint, polish, and baubles.
