Joey Hawkins: Ski Shop Manager to Chef“When CCC&TI started its culinary program, it was an awesome opportunity for me. For years, I’d wanted to do that and knew I’d have to travel. CCC&TI covered every base and better prepared me for the workload I now face. Because of my experience and GPA at CCC&TI, I am still receiving scholarship opportunities as I continue to pursue my dream.”
After spending ten years as a ski shop manager for a local sporting goods store, Joey Hawkins was ready for a change. A native of Hickory, Joey grew up around cooking, always loved it and had also worked in various restaurants for many years. When he first learned CCC&TI would begin offering culinary arts, he immediately enrolled. While at college, he operated a catering business on the side, was a member of the Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the first president of the college’s Culinary Guild. A 2008 graduate, Joey now serves as kitchen manager for the Wine Cellar and Bistro in Lenoir. This fall, he was accepted into Johnson and Wales. His ultimate dream is teaching and/or working in a bakeshop. Because of CCC&TI, Joey is now well on his way to pursuing that dream.
