Dr. Edgar Foster: From Lenoir to Scotland

“The education I received at CCC&TI was first-rate. The community college setting often provides what larger academic settings cannot. I not only cultivated transferable skills at CCC&TI, but I benefited from instructors who inspired me to never stop aspiring to give my best in academic endeavors.”

Dr. Edgar Foster’s love of philosophy began through religion science and art classes at CCC&TI with a dose of encouragement. The Lenoir native admits he was not a model high school student and had Edgar Fosterbeen out of school for 15 years before enrolling at CCC&TI. Edgar says working full-time to support a wife and children while learning study habits posed a challenge. As a CCC&TI student, he was very active in TRIO/Student Support Services, leading the college’s first Alumni group. Through encouragement of various CCC&TI staff and instructors, Edgar transferred to Lenoir-Rhyne University with a Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship to pursue his interest in becoming an educator. After earning his bachelor’s degree at Lenoir- Rhyne in Hickory, he went on to obtain his PhD in Theology and Religious Studies from the University of Glasgow in Scotland in 2008. Edgar now serves as Visiting Adjunct Professor at Lenoir-Rhyne University. Today he still attributes much of his success to CCC&TI with the positive impact the college family had on his academic course in life.
