Gaston College exploded for nine runs over the first two innings to hand Caldwell their first loss of the 2023 season, 12-2 in seven innings Wednesday afternoon at Walker Stadium.
The Rhinos (6-1) scored three runs (two earned) in the first inning and belted two homeruns during a six run second inning to seize control of the game.
Hayden Setzer got the Cobras on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a solo homerun. Setzer would also homer in the bottom of the seventh inning, providing the Cobras with their only runs of the game.
Starter Zach Bohn took the loss for the Cobras on the mound. Although he allowed seven earned runs off of eight hits, while striking out one in his one-and-two-thirds innings of work.
Caldwell 2-1.
Gaston 6-1.
Gaston will host Combine Academy in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m..
Caldwell travels to Catawba Valley for a 4 p.m. start on Friday before hosting the Red Hawks on Saturday at 4 p.m.
