Industrial sewing machine operators operate or tend sewing machines to join, reinforce, decorate, or perform related sewing operations in the manufacturing of garment or non-garment products. They produce many different types of products including upholstery for furniture and wearable garments. They also work with a variety of fabrics that range from nylon to leather.
Introduction to Industrial Sewing is designed to give students an understanding in the basic skills and techniques necessary to be an industrial sewer. The student will be trained in the manufacturing concepts, tools, safety, and the communication skills that will help prepare them for a career as a sewer in various manufacturing settings. Emphasis is placed on machine operation, setup and maintenance, threading, sewing straight lines, corners, curves and welts. Upon completion, students should be able to set up and operate a variety of industrial sewing machines.

Many trainees have experience from sewing at home. Industrial sewing is much different but the skillsets are similar. Basic training can be obtained from on the job experience or through training courses at vocational schools and community colleges. Most employers prefer to hire high school graduates.
The average salary for an Industrial Sewer/Upholster is $17.41 per hour in North Carolina, with production pay being much higher from $30,000-$55,000 per year for a Sewing Operator.
Employment for Upholsters/Sewers projected to grow 7.4%, but Upholsterers are expected to see a growth of 0.481% over the same period. This occupation is expected to grow in North Carolina, but be slower in other parts of the US than the national average.
