CCC&TI offers educational opportunities in Nurse Aide I on both the Caldwell Campus and the Watauga Campus

Certified Nurse Assistant I (CNA)

The Certified Nursing Assistant Class prepares students to provide personal care and perform basic CNA skills for the elderly and other adults through classroom, lab, and clinical practice.

Course Content

Emphasis is placed upon the aging process.  Topics covered include:

  • Basic Nursing Skills
  • Cognitive & Mental Health Issues
  • Communication with the Healthcare Team
  • CPR (Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association)
  • Death & Dying
  • Disease & Disorders
  • Infection Prevention
  • Interpersonal Skills
  • Law, Ethics and Patient’s Rights
  • Personal and functional diseases/disorders
  • Personal Care Skills
  • Nutrition management and Elimination
  • Safety & Restorative Care

During clinical, Nurse Aide students gain experience by performing previously learned caregiver skills on residents in skilled nursing facilities. The CNA, who successfully completes all course requirements, receives a certificate of CNA class completion and becomes eligible to sit for the North Carolina State Nurse Aide I competency examination. Students must successfully pass the two-part written and skills portions of the state competency examination before being listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry with the Division of Health & Human Service Regulation and then they can be employed as a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)

    • Original SIGNED card
    • First and Last name on card must match government issued PHOTO ID
    • Cannot be laminated
  2. Government issued PHOTO ID
    • NCDL, Passport, Military ID
    • First and Last name on ID must match name on social security card
    • Must be valid and cannot expire before the end of class

  1. Immunization/Health Record Form (Required for clinicals)
    • Provided during orientation
    • Must be completed and signed, or stamped, by student’s health care provider or health department
    • Must have the following immunizations documented:
      1. Tetanus Booster within past 10 years OR record of Tdap
      2. Varicella (chickenpox) (2 shots or titer =/>1.09
      3. Measles, mumps, rubella – MMR (2 shots or + titer)
      4. Hepatitis B – (3 shots OR Positive Hepatitis B titer OR Declination)
      5. Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) – current, negative
      6. Covid Vaccination or CCC&TI approved Exemption letter

For questions regarding immunizations, student should contact their healthcare provider recommendation of need, based upon age, health concerns and current CDC guidelines. If there are special considerations, the provider must document the need on letterhead or office stamp for validation.

Competitive Admissions

One important requirement for acceptance into the Nursing Program at CCC&TI as well as many other nursing programs throughout the state, is that students successfully complete Nurse Aide I training and become listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry. Also, these students receive one (1) point toward competitive admission into the Physical Therapy Assistant program at CCC&TI and 10 points toward competitive admission into the Radiology program at CCC&TI.

  • Is NAI training required to enter Nursing or other health programs of study at CCC&TI?
    • Yes, General Admission Requirements for the ADN program requires proof of successful completion of state approved training program and current NAI listing.
  • How do I become listed as a Nurse Aide I (CNA) in North Carolina?
    • The student must submit an application to Nurse Aide Competency and Evaluation Service (NACES) to be scheduled for the state-administered written and skills competency evaluation (NNAAP exam). Students who pass will then be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.
  • What is the cost of the NNAAP examination?
    • $140 for electronic application submission
  • Where do I go to test?
    • CCC&TI is now an in-facility testing center. You can complete your Nurse Aide I at CCC&TI and apply for State Competency testing to be administered on our Hudson campus.
  • ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS, YOU MUST PROVIDE:
    1. A copy of your driver's license or other government issued photo ID
    2. A government issued Social Security Card, signed and not laminated
    3. A copy of your registry or other eligible health care credential certificates
