Our country allows faculty and students to use copyrighted copyrightmaterial for "fair use" only. The four factors which determine fair usage are:

  • Purpose: The material must be used for an educational production or presentation in a classroom setting. The material must be written in the student's own words.
  • Nature: Is the source being used fiction/non-fiction; educational/commercial; audio/print? Non-fiction, educational and print materials are more favorably afforded fair usage privileges.
  • Amount: Reproduce only a small portion of any work and do not use copyrighted pictures or most of a magazine article within a production.
  • Effect: Will the effect of your work lead to any commercial usages? If so, do not use copyrighted material within the project/production.
