The Human Services Technology curriculum prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies that provide social, community, and educational services. With the Human Services Technology/Mental Health Concentration students are specifically prepared for job opportunities in the mental health field.

Course work includes a variety of disciplines such as psychology, sociology, human services, substance abuse, and mental health.

Curriculum

Courses are delivered through a variety of methods:

  • traditional seated classroom
  • online
  • information highway room
  • clinical placement (in final semester)

Admissions

  • Like the other health sciences programs, admission is limited due to the number of available clinical placements.
  • Each year a cohort of students is admitted on a first-come, first-served basis once all admission requirements are completed.
  • Students must maintain a minimum grade of C in all courses in the curriculum in order to progress to the next semester.
  • A maximum of two admissions to the Human Services Technology programs is allowed.

Admission Requirements

  1. CCC&TI application
  2. Official documentation of high school graduation/high school equivalency
  3. Official transcripts of any college work
  4. Gateway English and math readiness
  5. Online information session
  6. MAR (Minimum Admissions Requirements) Review

Post Admission Requirements

  • Physical Examination including up-to-date immunizations and a TB skin test
  • Infant, Child and Adult CPR certification
  • Criminal background check
  • Drug Screening

Details and deadlines will be provided by program faculty.

Progression Requirements

  • The Human Services Technology programs student must demonstrate an acceptable level of competency by earning a grade of “C” or better in all courses in the program in order to progress to the next semester. Failure to maintain these program standards will result in dismissal from the program. Further details may be found in the program manual.

Once I graduate, where are the jobs?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Job Growth for mental health technicians for 2016-2026 is up 19% nationally and 22% for North Carolina.

Higher Education Opportunities

While some students will elect to use their associate degree in Human Services for immediate employment, others may decide to transfer to 4 year institutions for credentials in areas such as:
