Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Program Description

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program helps students learn to read and write or to improve their reading, writing, and math skills. Students may begin at any level and progress at their own pace to work on these skills. Tutors and one-on-one instruction are often available for ABE students. There are convenient class sites and times available in Caldwell and Watauga counties. Classes and materials are free.

Special Note About Minors

Students who are 18 years old and younger must complete a Minor Permission Form before being allowed to enroll in any Adult Education class. Students can either pickup the Minor Permission Form in person at the Adult Education reception desk in G Building (Caldwell) along with their enrollment packet or in the Adult Education Center (Watauga). Please call 828.726.2230 (Caldwell) or 828.297.5253 (Watauga) to have the form mailed. Instructions for completing the form are attached to it, but if there are questions, please call the Adult Education number above and someone will be glad to assist.

Minors 16-17 years of age that hold a current driver’s license must meet specific requirements to keep their license valid. The student must maintain good academic standing and attend class a minimum of 60 hours per month.

  • Applicants for the Adult Basic Education program on the Caldwell campus should call 828.726.2230 to obtain a registration packet and to make an appointment with an advisor to start the enrollment process. Watauga applicants may call 828.297.5253 to receive enrollment and registration information
