Adult Basic Education (ABE)

 

Caldwell Campus ABE Schedule / Watauga Campus ABE Schedule

Program Description

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program helps students learn to read and write or to improve their reading, writing, and math skills.  Students may begin at any level and progress at their own pace to work on these skills.  Tutors and one-on-one instruction are often available for ABE students.  There are convenient class sites and times available to fit almost any schedule.  Morning, afternoon, and evening classes are available.  Classes are available in Caldwell and Watauga counties.  Classes and materials are free.

Adult Basic Education Registration (Caldwell Campus)

All Caldwell Campus Adult Basic Education (ABE) students must attend a free Orientation and Assessment session before enrolling in a class.  To sign up for an Orientation and Assessment session or to get more information, please call (828) 726-2230.

The Orientation and Assessment session meets Monday thru Thursday for one week for a total of 12 hours.  Students may attend either a morning session or an evening session. Morning sessions meet from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, and evening sessions meet from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.  All Orientation and Assessment sessions are free.

In an Orientation and Assessment session, students:

  • receive important information about Adult Basic Education classes,
  • are taught tips for success in class and on tests,
  • take placement tests in reading, math, and language, and
  • receive an introduction to the college and its services.

After completing an Orientation and Assessment session, students meet with an advisor and will receive placement test results (scores), discuss educational goals, select a class site and schedule, and ask any questions they may have.

After meeting with an advisor, students may begin their ABE class.  The instructor will meet individually with each student on the first day of class to orient him/her to the new class.

Special Note About Minors

Students who are 16 or 17 years old must complete a Minor Permission Form before being allowed to enroll in any Basic Skills class.  Students can either pickup the Minor Permission Form in person at the Basic Skills Department or call (828) 726-2230 and have the form mailed.  Instructions for completing the form are attached to it, but if there are questions, please call (828) 726-2230.  Someone will be glad to help you.

Adult Basic Education Registration (Watauga Campus)

All Watauga Campus Adult Basic Education students must attend a free Orientation and Assessment session before enrolling in a ABE class.  The session lasts approximately three hours.  To sign up for an Orientation and Assessment session or to get more information, please call (828) 297-5253.

Registration is held every Thursday at either 9:00 a.m. or at 5:00 p.m. in the Watauga Basic Skills Center.  All Orientation and Assessment sessions are free.

During the Orientation and Assessment session, students will:

  • take a tour of the Watauga Campus, and
  • take placement tests in reading, math, and language.
