Adult High School Program

Program Description

The Adult High School Program is for anyone who wants to complete his/her high school education and earn a diploma.  Adult High School classes are offered at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute on both the  Hudson and Boone campuses. Classes are free and textbooks are provided free of charge for use in the classroom.

Students may choose to enroll in morning classes, evening classes, or both.Core subject classes meet twice a week on either Tuesday and Thursday or Monday and Wednesday

Class attendance is required and students must stay the entire 3 hours. Most classes can be completed in eight weeks. One unit of credit is earned for each class that is successfully completed.

Graduation Requirements

A total of 20 units must be completed for graduation.  Adult High School applicants may receive transfer credits for courses previously completed in public, private, or home schools. If there are no credits to transfer, a student may earn all 20 units with the Adult High School program. The requirements for graduation are:

  • a minimum score of 9.0 on the reading, language skills, and math placement tests
  • passing scores on the N.C. Competency tests

3 units (to include Biology & Physical Science)

Social Studies

3 units (to include Government/Economics, US History, & World Studies)

Health or PE

Adult High School Registration (Caldwell Campus)

All Caldwell Campus Adult High School (AHS) students must attend a free Orientation and Assessment session before enrolling in a class.  To sign up for an Orientation and Assessment session or to get more information, please call (828) 726-2230.

The Orientation and Assessment session meets Monday thru Thursday for one week for a total of 12 hours.  Students may attend either a morning session or an evening session. Morning sessions meet from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, and evening sessions meet from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.  All Orientation and Assessment sessions are free.

In an Orientation and Assessment session, students:

  • receive important information about Adult High School or review classes,
  • are taught tips for success in class and on tests,
  • take placement tests in reading, math, and language, and
  • receive an introduction to the college and its services.

After completing an Orientation and Assessment session, students meet with an advisor and receive placement test results (scores), discuss educational goals, make an appointment for a new student registration session, and ask any questions they may have.  During the new student registration session, students will work out class schedules and register for Adult High School classes.

Special Requirements for Adult High School Students

  • A reading, language skills, and math placement test score of 9.0 or above is required to be eligible for Adult High School class registration.  For students who do not meet this placement score, free review classes are available to help bring up test scores.
  • Students must contact their previous high school to request transcript records.  Transcripts must be mailed to the Adult High School Director or hand carried in a sealed envelope to the Orientation and Assessment session.  Transcripts must be received before Orientation and Assessment session completion.

Minors 16 – 17 years of age must have a completed Minor Permission Form prior to enrolling in any Basic Skills program, assessment activity, or class.   Students can either pickup the Minor Permission Form in person at the Basic Skills Department or call (828) 726-2230 and have the form mailed.  Instructions for completing the form are attached to it, but if there are questions, please call (828) 726-2230.  Someone will be glad to help you.

All Watauga Campus Adult High School (AHS) students must attend a free four (4) hour Orientation and Assessment session before enrolling in a class.  To sign up for an Orientation and Assessment session or to get more information, please call (828) 297-5253.

Students may choose to attend a morning Orientation and Assessment session held each Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. or an evening session held each Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  All Orientation and Assessment sessions are free.
