Basic Skills Registration Information

 

Each Basic Skills Program has its own registration information and requirements.  To find out more about registration, select the program that interests you.

GED or Adult Basic Education Registration (Caldwell Campus)

All Caldwell Campus GED and Adult Basic Education (ABE) students must attend a free Orientation and Assessment session before enrolling in a class.  To sign up for an Orientation and Assessment session or to get more information, please call (828) 726-2230.

The Orientation and Assessment session meets Monday through Thursday for one week for a total of 12 hours.  Students may attend either a morning session or an evening session. Morning sessions meet from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, and evening sessions meet from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.  All Orientation and Assessment sessions are free.

In an Orientation and Assessment session, students:

  • receive important information about GED or Adult Basic Education classes,
  • are taught tips for success in class and on tests,
  • take placement tests in reading, math, and language, and
  • receive an introduction to the college and its services.

After completing an Orientation and Assessment session, students meet with an advisor and will receive placement test results (scores), discuss educational goals, select a class site and schedule, and ask any questions they may have.

After meeting with an advisor, students may begin their GED or ABE class.  The instructor will meet individually with each student on the first day of class to orient him/her to the new class.

Special Note About Minors

Minors 16 – 17 years of age must have a completed Minor Permission Form prior to enrolling in any Basic Skills program, assessment activity, or class.   Students can either pick up the Minor Permission Form in person at the Basic Skills Department or call (828) 726-2230 and have the form mailed.  Instructions for completing the form are attached to it, but if there are questions, please call (828) 726-2230.  Someone will be glad to help you.

All Watauga Campus GED and Adult Basic Education students must attend a free Orientation and Assessment session before enrolling in a GED or ABE class.  The session lasts approximately four hours.  To sign up for an Orientation and Assessment session or to get more information, please call (828) 297-5253.

Registration is held every Thursday at either 9:00 a.m. or at 5:00 p.m. in the Watauga Basic Skills Center.  All Orientation and Assessment sessions are free.

During the Orientation and Assessment session, students will:

  • Students must contact their previous high school to request transcript records.  Transcripts must be mailed to the Adult High School Director or hand carried in a sealed envelope to the Orientation and Assessment session.  Transcripts must be received before Orientation and Assessment session completion.

English as a Second Language (Caldwell Campus and Watauga Campus)

All ESL students must attend a free Orientation and Assessment session before enrolling in a class. In an Orientation and Assessment session, students receive important information about ESL classes and take a reading placement test.  If you have questions, please call (828) 726-2230 (Caldwell) or (828) 297-5253 (Watauga)

Caldwell Campus Classes

For classes on the Caldwell Campus, students may attend either an evening or morning Orientation and Assessment session. 

An evening Orientation and Assessment session is held each week, and students must attend on Mondays from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  Students must attend both Monday and Wednesday sessions, and they must begin on Monday.

A morning Orientation and Assessment session is held each week on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

St. Francis Church Class

The Orientation and Assessment session for students who wish to attend class at St. Francis Church is held the last Tuesday of each month at the church beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Watauga Campus Classes

At Watauga Basic Skills, the Orientation and Assessment session is held the first Tuesday of each month beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Compensatory Education (Caldwell Campus and Watauga Campus)

The Compensatory Education Program is designed for adults with mental retardation or traumatic brain injury.  The classes are designed to help students acquire basic skills, to develop abilities needed to become more independent and self-directed, and to meet and manage community, social, work, and personal adult responsibilities.  For information about registering for Compensatory Education classes, please call (828) 726-2275 or 726-2230 in Caldwell County and (828) 264-7670, ext. 2275 in Watauga County.

To enroll in Compensatory Education classes, individuals must:

  1. be at least 18 years old,
  2. be able to take care of personal needs at the class location, and
  3. be able to benefit from instruction
